I have recently got very interested in the art of Paintography, which is the combination of photography and painting using custom brushes and various filters in Photoshop CS5. In my case I use Oil Paint (which is found in the Pixel Bender plug-in available from Adobe and currently only usable inside CS5), and various brushes that I customise according to the final output I want. When applying the oil paint, I do this very selectively too, so that I try to maintain a more realistic result.
For this picture I first used Nik Color Effex to get the night-time effect, then I applied a light effect where the sea and boats were already illuminated. I then duplicated the background and then selected various areas and applied the oil paint at different settings, and finally painted over parts of the picture for finishing off, always referring to the original background to try and keep the appearance of realism. The original photo, of which this is a 100% crop from a scene the other side of Poole Harbour in front of Corfe Castle, was taken in colour at 250mm in the afternoon. To me it looked pretty uninteresting like that, so I worked on it to bring out a different "feel". Nothing was added or taken away from the original shot, so this is not a photomanipulation in the sense referred to by dA. Technically speaking it could either go into the Digital Art, painting & airbrushing category, or in the Phogography, Darkroom, Digital, Miscellaneous Processes category. (Not an easy decision to make as to which one!
)
