I absolutely love this... I have wanted to do stuff that is similar to this type of style but have not managed to create it... what programs do you use if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you :) It is all created in a fractal program called Ultra Fractal. Signature is added to the display image inside Photoshop.

Is art such as this essentially a planned collage of separate fractal pieces which, when brought together, create a larger picture? I want to be sure I understand what I'm seeing. I already know I like it very much!

Works like these are all planned out, but all created and amalgamated as one image inside the Ultra Fractal program, which has the wonderful facility of being able to work in layers. It also has tool facilities. This enables me to use masks, to take off opacity, to change the layer properties, and to thus produce different parts of the image on the different layers. It is all produced within the fractal program (all of what you see is fractal). In many cases, people work by tweaking numbers and working out the equivalent of equations in order to produce something. I'm hopeless at maths and never work that way. I do it all intuitively and visually, changing things around as I go until I get what I want as a result. For me the fact that there is a code behind the picture is totally incidental - by that I mean one doesn't see the code at all, but if you right click on the picture whilst it is still inside UF, then paste "it" into a text file, you get a code and that is the parameter file. Also when I save my work inside UF it saves as a code (parameter file).

It takes many hours for me to produce my fractal scenes and often I have to do a quick render to see how it will look as a Bitmap file and then do some more fiddling around where things don't quite meld together. It is very different to working inside say, Photoshop, as manoeuvring the elements around is not straight forward like it would be in Photoshop, and also creating various shapes sometimes take many painstaking hours of work using masks.

I hope this explanation helps :)

Oh, it does and thank you for it! This process sounds fascinating and challenging. I feel amazement to know mathematics produces such beauty and form and am glad you took the time to produce, and share, it with us. Thank you!
